Horror Maximus

about

In most cases the final tune of an album should pretty much lay it all out (assuming of course that you give any thought about song order). That’s certainly true about what is attempted here. In a lot of ways “Horror Maximus” sums up what HOOFMARK is all about: an effort to reconcile old heavy music – extreme music – with, let’s call it non-disruptive experimentation (which in this case encompasses spoken word and country music).

It’s still organic sounding. That has always been the number one priority. and I feel it’s organic not just because of the production, but also because it’s not sewed-up, it’s not a Frankenstein monster (not here at least). Sure, most of the tracks here lack a traditional song structure, but that doesn’t mean they lack a natural progression.

Lyrics took a long time to figure out. It was a horror in itself to finish this up. Sometimes you write something from start to finish as if you always knew the lyrics. Other times you have to dig deep, re-work, re-do and hope for the best.

lyrical themes: Anti-Religion, Philosophy

lyrics

When god signs
I’ll behold the spine of the universe
The pillars are falling
The chariots are damned

At odds with darkness
There’s no horror like doubt
Like a dog without a leash
Or a treasure you can reach
But you’ll never get

And yet
I deny his sovereignty
In a sense
This horror sets me free

Horror Maximus

A dangerous thing, soul searching
It’s why duties are kept unclear
Just move with a confidence unheard of
And there’ll be nothing to fear
No

And so
I deny his sovereignty
Should all else fail
Just thinking sets you free

Splash the black with even the faintest blue
There’s blue on the sky during a storm
All these colors, I couldn’t control

I once carried the eyes of a fool
Drank the rain till I was full
Didn’t notice there were rivers too

Bled and cried, it was all my fault
Slowed myself down to a halt
That didn’t have to fall to my lot

Let the pillars fall! The chariots burn!

Now I color the landscape
I drink and partake
In a celebration of freedom long due
Experimentation promising to
Release me from these urges

Stand straight
Don’t be held straight
And watch for steps on which he once spat
The road to paradise, imagine that

So when god signs
You should sign right back
Pointing to the end of the track
To his body, bleeding black
That’s the black that once colored the universe

It’s been a long way
It’s certainly been a while
To get here
To make it
There were holes along the path
Hyenas on the side of the road
Big bad appetites swallow virtues whole
No hinges on the door
No handles either
Even when you get there
Help, reverence – you’ll have neither
Just have to squeeze through
Suck it in just enough
It ain’t the walls closing in on you
It’s the tightening of your handcuffs

So it went this beautiful trip
And not a crossroad since
You can run at the crack of the whip
Or proudly walk without a wince

Who know how far you’ll go…
Who knows how far you’ll go without your shackles
