about
This is heaviest number on the demo. It’s called “From the Foot of God’s Throne” – a title which I outright stole from a passage on Mary Shelley’s “The Last Man”.
I adore a well-balanced record and couldn’t for the heart of me wrap things up without presenting a well-served slice of moronic hell. Templates be damned! This is riff, on top of riff, on top of riff discipline – and one overstuffed, overweight motherfucker.
Guess the closest thing resembling a main riff here sounds to me a whole lot like some of Mefisto's 2nd demo stuff (which, in truth, is my favorite one of the two). Track starts out quite slow and it never really kicks off till the break. That was certainly intentional. I already had my share of fast stuff when this was written.
Guitars were executed proper Tom G. style, possessing plenty of string bending and that’s pretty much true about the whole demo. There’s a bit on the track that’s a total “Antichrist” (the Sepultura track) love letter. But I’m guessing you spotted that.
No idea why I started out the track shouting out the title of the song. It just felt right when we hit that rec. button (it wasn’t planned beforehand). As for the vocals themselves, yeah, you can tell I like that Panzerfaust album haha.
Tried to come up with a story as violent as the sounds themselves. Reading Cormac McCarthy certainly helped a bunch. The abrupt ending was inspired by Beatles track “I Want You (She's So Heavy)”. I’ll take McCartney over Lennon any day of the week, but hats off to Lennon for that song.
Finally, shouts to Tangorodrim. Dedicating this song to them.
“(…) but he is not mad! Were an angel from the foot of God’s throne to assert it, never, never would I believe it. He is wronged, betrayed, imprisoned – save him!” - Mary Shelley’s The Last Man (1826)
lyrics
From the foot of god’s throne
Tell me
This once I tripped on loose stones
Each darker than the one before
I’ve never been to heaven
Who knows just what’s in store
From here I still don’t know what it is for
Would you be so kind as to tell me what I’ll find?
My walk is heavy, the progress is slow
But my hand is steady and for once I know
Strange was the night, I recalled
Now I learned it’ll never end…
Finally reaching the walls of heaven
My knock will force its structure to the ground
Going down
I turn the hunger inside out
Blown out of proportion
Take a look at its colors
Bring yourself to its level
Can’t you smell the redness?
This scent that left you aghast
Blurs with a power unsurpassed
Spreads right through your hands
Makes them twinkle in the sky
Will this light blind giants?
Can your fingers command truths?
Can your limbs heal us?
No! No! No!
A certain greyness, neutral entrails
A certain death under a new bright sun
The killer leaning upon his gun
Reaching far-reaching ends
Ever reaching sands
Never ending misery!
His justice is higher than men
It was sculpted on the shores of reason
Dance! Dance! Now he’ll never die!
