Out of all my songs, this is the one that gave me the most problems. I practically composed it in one sitting, one night, just right after arriving home from a summer holiday out. I thought the tune was pretty good, but as time went one (and I’m talking years!) I kept changing it and changing it. The lyrics especially. Guess I was afraid it felt to ballad-y for this demo. And it did haha it went from being the wrong kind of romantic to the right kind of emotional, if that makes any sense. I don’t know how or why it evolved into this conversation between characters, but that’s another story.

If you are listening to this digitally, “Dust Trails Blazing” should be seen as the conclusion of side A.

“Stay away from the shark,” they said
Told me that he has grown and bites
Told me not not to stray again
Said, “Don’t put up a fight.” Ha!

There! Beyond the prairies, the frost, the dust bowl
Lies a ship, or so I’ve been told
On this ship flames rise
Dancing high, sings the song of our demise

But there was neither smoke nor fire there burned
Come shark, doom too long have I earned

No bison to guide me
No wolves to track me
All alone with the raven
My ship is her haven

They blazed beauty till the end…

And a shark had his say
Told me I was his next prey
Told me that straying from the path
Could only bring out his wrath

I learned a lot from the great white shark
I learned that sometimes he don’t chew
I learned that sometimes he does
“But not this time and not with you”

So, remember, it’s through defiance
That great dangers come to transpire
In the end, you’ll realize
Great whites too spit fire

We’re dust
With the wind
No trail we’ll leave unburned
